Symposium Announcement

South Africa is proud to host the UNESCO IHP-HELP Symposium aimed at bridging the gap between science and policy to assist in solving “water related issues” at the local, national and international levels.  You are invited to participate in this major international knowledge-sharing opportunity which brings together water law and policy experts, water resource managers and water scientists to solve real problems in real catchments.
Objectives Of This Symposium

This Symposium is aimed at bridging the gap between science and policy towards sustainable development at local, national and the international levels. The UNESCO HELP initiative has identified 67 catchments from 56 countries as HELP Basins, and this Symposium is a tremendous knowledge sharing opportunity on how to put HELP objectives into action.

Among other tangible outcomes, this Symposium will go a long way towards achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

Background of UNESCO-HELP

There is a so-called “Paradigm Lock” between outdated but often accepted practices adopted in water resource management for the benefit of stakeholders and the application of more recent scientific findings and approaches.  Scientific research has tended to be isolated by lack of proven utility, whilst water policy and management is often isolated by legal and professional precedence.

The HELP initiative is creating a new approach to integrated water resource management through the creation of frameworks for water law and policy experts,  water resource managers and water scientists to work together on water-related problems.  HELP is a “user-driven” initiative requiring active involvement of both policy and facilitating (water and land resource managers) groups to set the policy agenda and ensure the scientific results will benefit societal needs through a re-look at  policy and management practices.
